A Wood-to-Wood Cascade Upcycling Valorisation Approach
The W2W project will produce and validate a comprehensive framework for cascade valorisation of wood from Construction and Demolition (C&D), and furniture waste, consisting of four core components:
- Advanced separation & sorting technologies: Adaptive separation and sorting system based on cascade valorisation thresholds, making use of human-robot collaboration and mixed reality technologies;
- Upcycling processes and technologies: mechanical, chemical, and bioremediation processes to recover wood or resources from waste and use them in new products which have the same quality as the ones produced by primary resources;
- Digital tools for improving circular flows of secondary materials: LCA-based tool to predict and assess the impact of different cascade paths, supply chain management tool for the optimisation of upcycling of secondary materials, Digital Product Passport (DPP), and digital platform for circularity/ upcycling information exchange;
- Supportive framework in policy, market, and skills. The W2W framework will be validated in three use cases concerning different areas of wood waste management.
DRAXIS main role involves the development of an interactive tool to predict and assess the impact of different cascade paths or sequences for possible further uses of wood products and their materials. The tool will be based on comprehensive studies on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA) and Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA). At the same time, DRAXIS also leads the efforts for establishing the main framework elements upon which the pilot work will be based, for example the selection and quantification of the most relevant key performance indicators (KPIs) required to evaluate the results obtained by the application of the W2W framework.
