ROSETTA aims to generate reliable knowledge regarding food waste at the different stages of the food supply chain due to current marketing standards. The project identifies the causes of food waste, develops methods to estimate waste amounts, and explores alternative solutions to promote safe and innovative business models for sub-optimal foods. These solutions are co-designed with partners involved in the food supply chain or responsible for creating private marketing standards.
The project examines five case studies (Ireland, Spain, Poland, Denmark and Greece) across four food categories (fruits and vegetables, dairy, meat and cereals). New approaches are implemented in real-world conditions and evaluated for their environmental, social and economic impact compared to existing practices. The assessment of the sustainability of alternative solutions to reduce food waste is carried out by DRAXIS ENVIRONMENTAL SA. The knowledge generated can be used to develop guidelines and recommendations for future policy development to prevent and reduce food waste.
Within the project DRAXIS develops a digital toolkit to share assessment data (online repository), showcase good practices (catalogue) and facilitate networking between multi-actors in the food value chain (open innovation platform).
In addition, DRAXIS conducts the Life Cycle Assessment, the Social Life Cycle Assessment and the Techno-economic assessment of the alternatives developed within the project.
