The iDriving project focuses on enhancing road safety through intelligent, data-driven solutions for urban and secondary roads across Europe and on establishing safety benchmarks, to ensure clear standards for assessing risks.
A key innovation of the project is its ability to facilitate real-time data exchange between vehicles, sensors, and infrastructure. This interconnected system enhances decision-making by providing up-to-date insights on road conditions and traffic dynamics. Additionally, the integration of compact sensors makes it easier to deploy monitoring systems on both roads and vehicles, offering a flexible and efficient approach to data collection.
One of the most critical aspects of iDriving is its advanced monitoring systems, which analyze a range of factors, including road conditions, driver behavior, and weather patterns, to predict and prevent hazards. The project also improves road maintenance operations by leveraging AI tools such as 3D visualization and defect detection, allowing for more precise and timely repairs. Furthermore, AI-based warning systems provide real-time alerts about potential dangers, including accidents, poor weather conditions, and hazardous road conditions.
All these technological advancements come together in a Digital Twin, a virtual model of the road network that helps relevant agencies anticipate and respond to safety issues more effectively.
DReVen leads the Smart Environmental Condition Monitoring Tool, focusing on weather monitoring and forecasting to enhance road safety. This tool supports stakeholders in selecting and strategically placing weather stations, ensuring optimal environmental data collection. Using data assimilation techniques, DReVen improves weather forecasting, providing critical insights for hazard detection, like flooding and black ice. A second tool, based on AI technology will also be created by DReVen to support the generation of near-real-time alerts about hazardous meteorological conditions, that could be dangerous to drivers and road users. Lastly, another key aspect of DReVen’s role is the seamless integration of weather data into the iDriving system, enabling real-time alerts for both infrastructure operators and road users.
